Thoughts about Evolution Point, Social Media and other ramblings

I have decided to start a new series of newsletters to talk about strategic marketing. I'm not sure how well received it is going to be, but I suspect it might be interesting for some people. I have already received several nice comments from people who received the introduction. If you are not on the mailing list, you should sign up. After all, it's mainly for your benefit and education.

Remember the "good old days" where everyone was paranoid about giving away credit card information  on the web? It was not long ago where most people are apprehensive about buying online and putting their credit card information on an unknown website. Today, we have swung to the other end of the spectrum where no one seems to pay attention to online privacy anymore. It is amazing how many people put their most lives online without thought of who might be reading them...

I have always told my clients that no one really knows how ranking on search engines really work. All search engine algorithms are proprietary and as a result, no one can tell what factors really impact  site ranking. However, as search engine optimization experts, we make really good guesses. The game is based on who can guess better. Ultimately, it is the results of the effort that counts.

I was reading an article that lists some factors that may impact your SEO ranking. The article lists 111 items, but here are some which I thought is not so obvious and rather debatable; while others are obvious (duh! factor).  However, it definitely provides food for consideration...

It's been a while since I have updated my blog. It could be a good thing or bad thing, I suppose since we've been busy doing many new and interesting things.

Social media has always been on top of our minds lately, even more than search marketing or mobile marketing. Everyone seems to be jumping on board. I also get emails from friends, vendors, clients and competitors about their social media efforts.

We are by no means a big company. One of the things I really love about Evolution Point is tha we are a small, dedicated, passionate company who loves the things we do. As a result, we do not hire very often.

However, we do take in interns every other year. There are a few reasons for this: one, we try to give back to the community by providing people the opportunity to learn from us; second, we try to learn from them and see how they use the internet. And ultimately, it's a win-win situation for all.

Twitter wrote a short, rudimentary guide on how businesses can utilize Twitter. I will say that it is not very useful, but if you are new on Twitter, and you are wondering what the big to-do about Twitter is, this guide is for you.

One of the common questions that I get with clients about Twitter (or social media tools in general) is “how does this make my life easier?” The question is a relevant one because we are all busy folks and adding another channel of advertising / marketing / PR doesn’t make our lives easier. On the contrary, it makes our lives more difficult as it presents another challenge that we have to work with.

So, here’s my small contribution on how to make your life easier using Twitter.

Like many companies, we run into issues with updating our website. Sure, our website is fully optimized, built on a content management system (CMS) and allows multiple content editors, but in the end, it is still quite an effort to update the home page to keep content fresh daily or weekly. Someone needs to be at their desk, log in, make the changes on the home page and log out. I hate to think we have to hire an intern just to update our website constantly. So we sat around and figure out how to keep our home page relevant...

In case you haven’t heard, Microsoft just released their latest incarnation of the search engine, Bing. This search engine replaces the old Microsoft MSN “Live Search”.  With $80 million in marketing from Microsoft’s deep pockets, Microsoft hopes that their search engine may compete against Google’s monopoly on search traffic.  This is an uphill battle considering that Google still holds about 68% of all search traffic while Bing only garnered 8% on the onset of the launch.
